| MEET ZION AND YOSEMITE Zion and Yosemite (a.k.a. Yoshi) are two of the longest residents in foster care with Foothills Canine Rescue. This brother and sister duo were born in a foster’s garage and have lived in the rescue’s care for almost two years. They each are looking forward to finding their furever homes. Zion and Yoshi are mixed breeds of Rhodesian Ridgeback and Terrier and are short-haired medium-sized dogs. They will be two years old in November. Both are house and crate trained, both are leash savvy, and both like to ride in the car. Zion (top photo) is a neutered male, weighing around 50lbs. He is black with white patches. He loves people, but he can be choosy about dogs. He enjoys playing with balls and flying discs. Zion’s adoption fee has been entirely sponsored by a generous donor and he is eagerly awaiting his new home! Yoshi (bottom photo) is a spayed female, weighing around 45lbs. She is mostly black and fairly sleek. She loves people, dogs, and puppies and enjoys splashing in water. Yoshi’s adoption fee has been partially sponsored by a generous donor and she cannot wait to find her new family and a home. |

WAGGIN’ TAIL RESALE & MARKETPLACE CELEBRATES 10 YEARS!! Waggin’ Tail Resale & Marketplace is celebrating ten years in business as part of Foothills Canine Rescue! That’s ten years of sales, service, and support for our rescue efforts and canine care. A decade of growth and success achieved by volunteers and gracious donors. Waggin’ Tail first opened in 2013 in a small storefront along northeast Wilkesboro Blvd. (Rt.18) in Lenoir. It operated in 600 square feet of office space turned into a thrift store and was run by a handful of volunteers. In 2014, Foothills Canine Rescue (then known as Pet Partners Rescue) purchased a 2,400 square foot building near the Caldwell County Fairgrounds. Waggin’ Tail moved into this much larger space still operating as a thrift store – accepting donations and run by volunteers. In 2018, with the help of some very generous donors, Foothills Canine Rescue was able to sell the building near the fairgrounds and purchase a newer bigger building just up the street on Joyceton Church Road. This building, the current home of the rescue, offered 6,400 square feet for sales space, office space, storage space, and room to expand to include a shelter for rescue dogs. With this move, Waggin’ Tail changed from a thrift store to an upscale resale store. Now Waggin’ Tail Resale & Marketplace, our retail store still thrives on donations, but with an eye for better quality household items in good resale condition. The store no longer deals in clothing, shoes, books, media, or outdated electronics. We have a pet supply section available to shoppers and dedicated space for our dog adoptions. In 2022, work was completed and the Bunch Anderson Shelter addition to the building was officially opened and became operational. Growth has continued into 2023 as Waggin’ Tail appointed a dedicated store manager, purchased local billboard advertising space, and had record sales figures in the first part of the year. The store still operates four days each week with a staff of 10-12 volunteers working 3-4 hour shifts to offer our customers a great shopping experience. What a wonderful decade of growth and support! Happy 10th year to Waggin’ Tail Resale! |

FCR RECEIVES HEALTH AND WELFARE GRANT Foothills Canine Rescue has proudly received a $1,000 grant from the Friends of NCVMA Foundation, on behalf of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association. This grant is awarded annually to shelters and rescue organizations to promote animal health and welfare and to promote the North Carolina veterinary profession. FCR was nominated for this grant by Dr. Laura Pearson of Caring Concepts Mobile Veterinary Hospice & Euthanasia Service and by Dr. Bradley Mills, the District 10 NCVMA Representative. This grant is great news for our rescue’s dedicated medical team. Dr. John Thuss, our attending veterinarian, along with Health Director Carol Deal and Veterinary Technician Karen Belding, work hard to maintain a high standard of care and wellness for all dogs in our rescue, both in foster homes and in our shelter. While other areas of our rescue benefit from material donations and volunteers’ time, the medical team relies on monetary gifts, grants, and donations to provide medicines and supplies. |

Spay/Neuter Your Pets Spread the Word The average lifespan of spayed and neutered cats and dogs is demonstrably longer than the lifespan of those not. A University of Georgia study, based on the medical records of more than 70,000 animal patients, found that the life expectancy of neutered male dogs was 13.8% longer and that of spayed female dogs was 26.3% longer. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT JANICE PACE Janice Pace volunteers in the Bunch Anderson Shelter… A LOT! This summer she could be found there often, working 3-4 shifts per week, covering for volunteers on vacation and filling shifts that have been vacant. Janice is a diligent worker and a lifelong dog lover, which makes her an invaluable asset to our rescue efforts. Originally from Long Island, Janice was living in Florida when she retired last year. She has since moved to Lenoir and started volunteering at Foothills Canine Rescue this past March. As a shelter volunteer, Janice’s favorite job is playing with the dogs. She notes that feeding/watering the dogs and keeping the shelter clean are important parts of the job, but she most enjoys spending time getting to know the dogs’ personalities and giving them play time. Janice says, “… dogs know who they like and who they can depend on” which is why she loves consistently giving each dog her time, a little training, and, of course, plenty of love and treats. When asked why she chose to become involved with FCR and the Bunch Anderson Shelter, Janice mentions how clean the shelter is and that it even smells clean! She thinks the other volunteers are “excellent” because they are hard-working dedicated people who give their time and energy to keep the shelter spotless and clean, as well as care for the needs of the dogs. When Janice is not busy volunteering at BAS, she enjoys reading, joining book clubs, and finding coffee shops. She is also mom to Mia, her large seven-year-old long-haired German Shepherd. We are glad Mia doesn’t mind sharing Janice with our rescue… we would hate to be without her! Thank you, Janice, for your time and devotion to our dogs! |
| VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!! Shelter Volunteers Our shelter volunteers work 3 shifts per day, 7days per week, 365 days per year. Morning and Evening shifts feed/water our pups and clean runs; Mid-day shift exercises the dogs and cleans as needed. We ask for a weekly commitment. Volunteers must be: 18 years or older, responsible, reliable and trustworthy. To inquire about volunteering in our shelter, text our Shelter Director, Susan Black, at 254-258-3230. Foster Families FCR is always looking for reliable and loving foster families. Since our shelter is reserved primarily for dogs on last-call rosters or emergency placement, foster parents temporarily house and love all other pups until they are placed into their forever homes.
